Top 9 Samsung Gear S3 Apps to Improve Your Health

Staying healthy isn’t easy, but owning a smartwatch gives you an edge. Smartwatches allow you to track nearly anything about your health using the apps and sensors built into the watch.

If you happen to buy the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch that we reviewed earlier, there are some great health apps that you might want to check out. To add health apps to your Samsung Gear S3, you need to install the Galaxy Wearable app on Your Android or your iPhone.

There’s not much to choose from, but what’s available is pretty good. Here are 9 Samsung Gear S3 apps that will help you improve your health.

Samsung Health: General Health Tracking

Out of all the Gear S3 health apps, Samsung Health is by far the most versatile and useful.

It integrates well with important sensors, like heart rate monitors and accelerometers. The main screen shows you an overview of your most important health metrics like calories burned and your activity level for the day.

You can scroll down through the menus to see more details and choose anything to keep an eye on. Some examples include:

  • Tracks your steps and calories (automatically)
  • Record workouts like running, walking, cycling, treadmill and more
  • Record your sleep quality (automatically)
  • Monitor water consumption
  • Monitor caffeine consumption

Every activity monitor is customized for activity. For example, choosing weight training allows you to choose from a long list of weight machines. You can enter weights and reps to record your workouts.

The companion Samsung Health app you install on your phone saves everything. You can view heart rate history, food and drink consumption, sleep quality, etc.

Download apps from Google Play app market or apple store.

There are very few health tracking apps that can beat Samsung Health. But if you don’t want to use Samsung’s own apps, there are additional options below.

MapMyRun: Roadmap and Runtime

If you’re an avid runner or even new to running, MapMyRun is a godsend. Installing the app on your Samsung Gear S3 allows you to easily record your run at any time.

Thanks to the GPS in the smartwatch, you can leave your phone in the car while driving. Your Gear will track and display your distance, duration, calories and continuously display your current heart rate.

Once you return to your phone, the exercise will sync and be recorded by the MapMyRun app on your phone.

The MapMyRun app on your phone keeps a log of every run or walk you’ve tracked with your Samsung Gear S3. Tap a log entry to view a page with a route on the map, elevation, distance, and time.

You have to deal with some ads, but they are not easily intrusive.

You can download the MapMyRun app on Google Play app market or apple store.

Run4Gear: Track Running, Hiking or Racing

If you don’t want to install an app on your phone to track your activity, then Run4Gear is for you. This Gear S3 app lets you track activities like running, hiking, or biking.

The app tracks your heart rate, speed, altitude, distance and time. Everything is displayed on the main face, and you can touch each number to switch between data points.

All data and analytics are right on your watch. You can look through the logs to see your performance breakdown as well as your workout stats and graphs.

You should have no trouble keeping data on your watch. The app offers the ability to export to third-party apps like Strava, Dropbox, Fitnesssyncer, Runalyze, and email.

Strava: Track your run, walk or ride

Strava is one of the most fully featured Gear S3 activity tracker apps out there. The tracking functions you can choose from on the home screen include activities like running, cycling, hiking, biking, and even Nordic skiing.

Activity recording will stop automatically when you pause your workout. Strava sends all your activity data to the Strava app on your phone.

This is where Strava stands out. The app is very community focused, so you’ll find lots of challenges that you can take on with people around your area.

On the app you can see all your stats for past activities. Set weekly goals and see the route you’ve taken with each activity log. Tap the menu to explore the challenge menu in your area.

Download Strava for your Android from Google Play app marketor for your iOS device from apple store.

Speedometer: Track and improve your speed

One thing that can be very helpful when you are running or cycling is knowing your speed. This can help you keep a constant pace to improve your endurance.

The Gear S3 app is very simple. Just tap the screen to start tracking your current speed. This is especially useful on your Samsung Gear S3 watch when you’re cycling, as you don’t have to worry about pulling out your phone to see your current speed. Just glance at your wrist.

Swipe left to see a log of your past speedometer logs. You’ll see the date, top and average speeds of your activity, and total distance.

Eat Slow & Healthy: Learn Conscious Eating Habits

Eating slowly will improve your digestion, keep you more hydrated and lead to easier weight loss because your brain will have time to register a feeling of fullness. However, getting into the habit of eating slowly is not easy. This is why the Gear S3 Eat Slow & Healthy app is useful.

Just scroll to the food picture with the calories usually matching the food you’re eating. Then touch Next at the bottom of the screen.

When you’re ready to start eating, just tap Begin. While you are eating, your watch will vibrate when the 15 seconds are up. This lets you know when you can take your next bite.

Considering the fact that people tend to shovel food into their mouths every 3 to 4 seconds, this app can help you speed up your eating without having to keep track of time.

Once you’ve finished eating, you’ll see a summary, including the number of bites, the time elapsed, and the estimated total calories of your meal.

Location Map: Record your run

Locus Map is a good running tracking tool, but it’s not quite as powerful as the others listed earlier in this article.

It’s a good alternative if the previous options don’t work for you, but keep in mind that some users have reported Gear S3 app issues on their watch. We didn’t encounter this during our testing on the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.

This application is very simple. Simply select the activity and then tap the green arrow to start recording your activity.

The activity screen includes elapsed time and distance (although you can customize this to show alternate speeds in the app preferences menu).

All activity recorded by the Gear S3 app on your watch will be logged in the companion Locus Maps app on your phone.

The app records data like distance, time, altitude and speed for each of your workouts. It also includes your workout maps on the map.

You can download the Locus Map Free app on Google Play app market. The app is not available for iOS users.

EyeRestminder: Protect your eyes from stress

People often forget that they also need to take care of their eye health. And with so many screens in front of us today, the eyes are under a lot of strain.

An important method to protect your eyes is to give them a break from those screens on a regular basis. This is where the EyeRestminder Gear S3 app can help.

This application is very simple, but useful. Simply scroll down to the session time you want to use and tap the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

EyeRestminder will vibrate your watch whenever your session is over and it’s time to give your eyes a rest. Take a walk or just sit back for a few minutes and close your eyes.

EyeRestminder helps you avoid long, stressful working hours in front of a computer screen that can unduly strain and hurt your eyes.

There are also plenty of great mobile apps to reduce eye strain.

LapsClicker: Stop losing the number of loops

Running laps around the track is a great way to get fit if you live somewhere where running is your only option. The only problem with racing is that it’s not always easy to keep track of how many laps you’ve completed.

Your mind can wander, and you will eventually lose numbers.

That won’t happen when you install LapsClicker on your Samsung Gear S3. This app allows you to tap a simple big green all the time around the track to keep track of the total laps.

You can enable recording to record your workout session, recording the days you worked out and the distance in the lap.

It’s a simple Gear S3 app, but very useful.

Use Samsung Gear S3 app for health

A smartwatch is great for many things, but one of the most popular is living a healthier life. The apps listed above will help you eat better, protect your eyes, track health stats and log all your workouts.

If you own a Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch, take advantage of all these apps to improve your health. And don’t forget that there are tons of great health apps just for your smartphone.
